Products we Currently Design/Manufacture:

RECORDING

The best of both worlds with 96 tracks of 24-bit/192kHz Digital Audio and 24 tracks of Analog Tape for a total of 120 tracks of high-quality audio. We use the finest Apogee A/D and D/A converters to ensure faithful digital transmission of sound with jitter-free clock sync. Full automation of digital audio complements the powerful production capabilities of NightWing Productions. (Pro Tools HD System added 10/03!)

MICS and
MONITORS

Microphones are arguably the most critical front-end aspect of the recording process. We utilize the finest that modern technology has to offer from the industry giant Neumann M149 Tube Microphone to the standard AKG C414. As some might argue that faithful monitoring is the most critical back-end process, we use Quested Monitoring and a custom 5.1 system to ensure accuracy and true audio transmission of the finished product. All bases are covered!

OUTBOARD

The finest outboard gear is employed for complete creative control over the signal path in order to achieve maximum impact and high levels of transparency and accuracy. With a hybrid compliment of Tube and Solid State gear from manufacturers such as Manley Labs, Avalon Design and Summit Audio, we offer the best selection of tools for the practical recording budget.

MIDI

MIDI has become an essential part of the industry and we offer a powerful selection of synths and controllers for complete creative freedom. NightWing's MIDI rig consists of samplers by Kurzweil, the State-of-the-Art Korg Karma™, synthesizers of the past like the Oberheim OB-8 and TG-77, the ubiquitous Trinity & Triton keyboards and controllers for both keys and percussion. Every piece of MIDI gear is meticulously inter-connected and fully automated through the central Macintosh sequencing system to make creative freedom the priority.
For the ultimate in realism and control we also offer the awesome Yamaha disklavier, an 88-key acoustic piano with MIDI control and comprehensive recording, playback and editing capabilities. Modern technology is nothing short of awesome and we serve it up.

TOYS

Finally, an enviable collection of guitars, basses and drums & percussion instruments to alleviate the synthesizer blues. You will also find a wide collection of yesterday and today's best sounding Tube Amplifiers for hard hitting and sweet sounding recordings. Combining the high-tech with the soul of traditional instruments, NightWing is here to help the music Shine On with crazy driving force and diamond precision.

AU300 Mic Pres

McCurdy hasn't made MicAmps for a long time...and now for a little history:

The AU300s are pretty much the ORIGINAL tube amplifier, designed circa 1945 (WWII era) when everything was made sturdy and to the highest, military standards. Howard Tremaine, author of the Audio Encyclopedia, pretty much invented the first tube circuits for audio/broadcast quality...then joined McCurdy who funded the building of his gear- all gain staging and driving handled by his AU300 amplifiers.

Telefunken and RCA followed suit, based on Tremaine's original designs which were published in the Audio Encyclopedia, and put out the V72s in Germany and the RCA BA11s in America. The McCurdy AU300s were manufactured by Tremaine himself with McCurdy in Canada.

So there it is. These are the original deal. Very simple circuit, excellent I/O transformers and are referred to as being Double Class A. Sonically, they are amazing to me, comparable only to a D.W.Fearn VT-2 (+/- $5000.00), and for the right track beat out any other pres in my rack (pics of my other pres here: http://www.nightwingpro.com/rack.html )

The bad new is that there are supposedly only 2 or 3 recording studios in the USA that own AU300s. I happen to have 6 modules in an original 8-slot rack and would never part with them.

Here's the good news. Since the circuit is so simple and the trannies are replicable, I have designed a faithful version with some modern upgrades (bypass-able, of course). The original AU300s are quite bulky and the Power Supply is HUGE (all tube). Since the trannies on the AU300s allow wiring variations for variable input/output impedances, variable or fixed gain, phantom power and padding...I have been able to produce a rackmounted stereo version with all of these options on stepped pots and switches (the original AU300 trannies must be re-soldered for different ohms, gain, etc.).

So, if interested, I can build you an EXACT replica, with the inclusion of the following features:
>Stepped switchable input impedance- 50, 150, 200, 600 ohms.
>Stepped variable gain- 48, 53, 60, 64, 68db
>Continuously Variable Output Atten.- from -20 to 0db
>EXACT same MicPre circuit-(2)12AX7s, (1)12AU7 (NO electrolytic Caps in the signal path)
>Same Carbon Composition resistors used in AU300
>Point-to-Point hand-wiring with same military-spec wire.
>Replicated Input/Output transformers
>3-Position Pad (necessary, this pre is HOT!)
>Switchable 48v phantom power
>Balanced XLR I/O
>Ground Lift
>Power supply
>19" rackmount design
>SAME awesome sound with more flexibilty in I/O due to custom designed Stepped Switches for Impedance and Gain adjustments.
>Hand-built for quality and tested against originals to guarantee faithful AU300 sound.
>Under $4K for the pair!

Anyway, had to let you know that you at least have an option if you MUST own some AU300s. They ARE great pres. You can hear them in action by following these links:
